A good starter grill for someone who wants both smoking and direct-flame searing in one unit, but skip it if deep smoke flavor at higher grilling temps is the priority.

  • PID controller keeps temperature swings surprisingly tight despite thin steel walls
  • Direct flame searing option in addition to indirect smoking (up to 750°F)
  • Light enough for one person to move around easily
  • Solid all-rounder for its class

Watch-outs

  • Smoke flavor noticeably drops off once temps climb above about 225°F
  • Rounded drip plate makes it awkward to sit a water pan without it tipping
  • 11 lb hopper needs frequent refills on long low-and-slow cooks
  • No app control at this price

Known niggles

  • At least one owner reported the pellet-lid plastic melting in heat and gumming up the auger, stopping pellet feed
