Pro Series II 850

Big cheap cast-iron pellet grid with a direct-flame sear cheat.

$629Approx. MSRP

A good first pellet grill for a beginner who wants reliable heat and easy operation, as long as you back up the built-in thermometer with your own probe.

Pros

  • Digital PID control board holds temperature evenly for most owners, even across large cooks (one owner ran 30 pork butts plus briskets and ribs with no issues)
  • Large cook space and hopper for the price
  • Straightforward to use for a first pellet grill
  • Loads of cooking room — 850 sq in feeds a crowd
  • WiFi/app control — watch the cook from your phone

Watch-outs

  • Built-in thermometer accuracy is inconsistent — don't rely on it alone
  • App functionality reported as unreliable by some owners
  • Occasional QC issues on individual units (e.g., DOA WiFi controller)
  • Heavy (152 lb) — pick its spot and leave it

Known niggles

  • Built-in thermometer readings are not fully trusted by owners — several recommend using a separate external probe
  • Occasional WiFi/app connectivity glitches, including a PID controller that failed to connect to WiFi out of the box (Pit Boss replaced it under warranty)
  • Grates need periodic manual pellet/ash sweeping to keep burn even
