A great small second grill or starter kamado for one or two people with limited space, but a family that regularly cooks for a crowd or wants two-zone cooking should size up to a Classic Joe.

Pros

  • Much cheaper and more compact than the full-size Joes, good for a patio, balcony, or as a second/travel grill
  • Still delivers real ceramic kamado heat retention and can smoke, grill, and sear like its bigger siblings
  • Simple design means fewer failure points than the digital or SloRoller models
  • Built to last (ceramic)
  • Ceramic holds heat and moisture — grill, smoke or bake

Watch-outs

  • Cooking surface is genuinely small — fine for a couple of steaks or burgers but a full brisket won't fit and even a pork butt uses most of the space
  • No two-zone cooking, so you can't run indirect and direct heat at once
  • Long cooks may need a mid-cook charcoal refuel due to smaller fuel capacity
  • Heavier and more awkward to carry than its 'portable' branding suggests

Known niggles

  • Thin metal carry handles dig into hands, making solo carrying uncomfortable despite the grill being marketed as portable
  • Smaller charcoal capacity can run out mid-cook on long low-and-slow sessions like brisket, requiring a mid-cook refuel
  • No two-zone/Divide & Conquer cooking option, unlike the larger Joes
