Classic III

18-inch ceramic with the best-in-class rack system and heat control.

$1,499Approx. MSRP

A great all-in-one grill/smoker for someone ready to spend real money and learn charcoal vent control, but overkill and pricey for someone who just wants to throw burgers on a grill.

Pros

  • 3-tier Divide & Conquer system lets you grill direct and smoke indirect at the same time
  • SloRoller insert noticeably improves smoke flavor and evens out hot spots vs earlier generations
  • Larger cooking surface than the II, plus an upgraded fiberglass gasket that seals better and lasts longer than the original felt gasket
  • Sturdier aluminum cart and shelves with more under-grill storage
  • Built to last (ceramic (multi-panel))

Watch-outs

  • Most expensive of the 18" Classic line
  • Very heavy, needs two people to move once assembled
  • Stock dome thermometer needs manual calibration to be trusted
  • Extra accessories (SloRoller, extra grates) add cost for a first-time buyer

Known niggles

  • Built-in dome thermometer commonly reads noticeably off (owners report up to ~100°F) from actual grate temperature until calibrated
  • Ash pan jams against the tapered base when debris builds up and becomes hard to pull out
  • Kontrol Tower top vent coating can gum up with soot/grease after repeated high-heat cooks and needs a hot burn-off to clear
