Classic Joe II Standalone

Cart-free version of the Classic Joe II 18-inch kamado grill, sized to drop into an outdoor kitchen island instead of sitting on a rolling cart.

$1,400Approx. MSRP

Good for a beginner who already has an outdoor kitchen island or table to set it into and doesn't want to pay for a cart they won't use, but most first-time buyers are better served by the standard cart version for the built-in workspace.

Pros

  • Same ceramic core, fiberglass gasket, and Divide & Conquer cooking as the cart version at a lower price
  • Smaller footprint and no cart assembly needed
  • Still has the one-handed Air Lift counterbalanced hinge for the lid
  • Built to last (ceramic)
  • Ceramic holds heat and moisture — grill, smoke or bake

Watch-outs

  • No side shelves or under-grill storage that the cart version provides
  • Same ash-pan clogging and thermometer-accuracy complaints as the cart model
  • Less stable on uneven ground without a proper base or table
  • Tight cooking area (250 sq in) — small batches

Known niggles

  • Ash pan jams against the tapered base and is fiddly to remove when full
  • Stock dome thermometer reads noticeably off from actual grate temperature until calibrated
  • HDPE plastic accessories feel less durable than later aluminum options
