Kamado Joe

Classic Joe I

18-inch ceramic kamado grill on a locking-wheel steel cart with a 2-Tier Divide & Conquer cooking system, cast-iron top vent, and a 225-750°F charcoal temperature range.

$1,000Approx. MSRP

A budget or secondhand entry into real ceramic kamado cooking for someone willing to do a bit more maintenance, but a beginner who wants the least fuss should pay up for a Classic Joe II or III instead.

Pros

  • Lowest-cost entry point into a real ceramic kamado, especially secondhand
  • Same core heat retention and versatility (grill/smoker/pizza oven) as pricier Kamado Joes
  • Simpler design with fewer moving parts than later digital or SloRoller models
  • Built to last (ceramic)
  • Ceramic holds heat and moisture — grill, smoke or bake

Watch-outs

  • Felt gasket wears out and needs replacing sooner than fiberglass gaskets on II/III
  • Cast-iron top vent rusts and its paint peels over time
  • No 3-tier Divide & Conquer or SloRoller like later generations
  • Stock thermometer inaccurate until calibrated

Known niggles

  • Felt (not fiberglass) gasket degrades faster and needs replacing sooner than on newer models
  • Cast-iron top vent can rust and its high-heat paint can peel/chip over time
  • Top vent isn't fully watertight, so rain can get inside if the grill is left uncovered
  • Dome thermometer reads noticeably off from actual grate temperature out of the box
