Kamado Joe

Big Joe II

24-inch ceramic kamado grill adding a Kontrol Tower top vent and Air Lift hinge over the Series I, with 450 sq in of cooking space on a locking-wheel cart.

$2,300Approx. MSRP

A strong choice for a beginner who wants Big Joe capacity for large gatherings and doesn't need the newest SloRoller smoke system.

Pros

  • Air Lift counterbalanced hinge makes the heavy 24" lid easy to open one-handed
  • Fiberglass gasket seals better and outlasts the original felt version
  • 2-tier Divide & Conquer gives large-capacity two-zone cooking
  • Big enough for whole briskets or multiple racks at once
  • Built to last (ceramic)

Watch-outs

  • Plastic HDPE side shelves feel less sturdy than later aluminum ones
  • Still very heavy, needs two people for setup and moving
  • Stock thermometer reads inaccurately until calibrated
  • Ash pan design still prone to jamming

Known niggles

  • Ash pan jams against the tapered base when full and is fiddly to empty
  • Stock dome thermometer can be significantly off from actual grate temperature until calibrated
  • HDPE plastic side shelves feel less sturdy/premium than the aluminum shelves on Big Joe III
